Galapagos on a Budget

Every since I was about 9 years old, I’d wanted to go to Galapagos Islands.  I loved Turtles, and the chance to see giant tortoises was going to be phenomenal!

I didn’t just want to go there to do an expensive tour, I wanted to spend longer there and see more.  I originally signed up to volunteer, however that fell through (not sure if it was a scam or not, but didn’t happen).   I was still determined to get there.

Many of the backpackers I met in Ecuador said that they were going to skip Galapagos because it was expensive.  My thoughts are, you’re far from home, you’ll never be closer, and … you only live once!

I flew expecting to stay 2 weeks, I stayed 3.

There are many things that you can do that are free (or nearly):

Isla Santa Cruz Island:

  • Visit the Puerto Ayoro – the largest town in the Galapagos,
  • Visit the Charles Darwin Research station and see different tortoises, iguanas that are found on the island,
  • Rent a bicycle and bike up and check out the highlands – los Gamelos and giant tortoises in their natural habitat.
  • If you SCUBA, book a dive tour.  Several of the dive shops that are PADI certified are good for diving,
  • Visit the fish market – watch the pelicans and then order some fresh fish!

Take a ferry to Isla Isabella /  Isabella Island – the least inhabited island.

Isla Isabella Island:

  • Check out the town of  Villamil,
  • Snorkel in a nearby lagoon,
  • Take a tour of the volcanoes – Sierra Negra,

Take another tour ferry back to Santa Cruz, and then to Isla Santiago / Santiago Island.

Isla San Cristabol Island:

  • Check out the history museum and research station.
  • Take a taxi to the beach on the other side of the island – Chino Beach.  Make sure to bring sunscreen!  its sunny!
  • Snorkel and see sea lions at Playa Loberia.
  • do a highlands tour or make your own!

There are just a few of the ideas to make your trip to Galapagos affordable.

I made an e-book, ad although you’re probably trying to travel on the cheap, this e-book is totally worth the money.  I wish something like this existed when I visited the island.

Check it out!
